How it works

How skill journeys work

Instead of guessing which exercise to train next, you follow a mapped-out progression tree for each skill.

01

Pick your target skill

Choose a skill like the handstand, muscle-up, planche, front lever, L-sit, or pistol squat and add it to your training goals. You can pursue several skills at the same time.

02

Train parallel tracks

Each journey combines complementary tracks. For the handstand, one track builds strength with chest-to-wall holds while another develops the kick-up and balance skills, until both converge into freestanding practice.

03

Unlock the next step automatically

The program watches your performance and moves you to the next progression as soon as you are ready. When you complete the requirements, harder exercises appear in your workouts automatically.

What is a calisthenics skill tree?

A calisthenics skill tree is a visual map of the exercise progressions that lead from your current level to an advanced skill. Each node is an exercise or drill, and the branches show which movements prepare you for the next stage. In Simple Calisthenics the skill tree is not just a chart: it is connected to your actual training program, so the exercises from your current stage appear directly in your workouts and get replaced when you advance.

Which calisthenics skills can I learn?

Simple Calisthenics includes step-by-step journeys for the handstand, muscle-up, ring muscle-up, planche, front lever, back lever, L-sit, handstand push-up, dragon flag, pistol squat, dragon squat, one-arm push-up, one-arm pull-up, and more. Foundational movements like pull-ups and dips have their own progressions too, so you can start a journey at any level.

How long does it take to learn a skill like the handstand?

It depends on your starting strength, mobility, and how often you practice. Most people need consistent practice over several months for a free handstand, while skills like the L-sit can come much faster. The skill tree keeps this manageable: you always train the step you are actually ready for, which is the fastest safe route to the final skill and avoids wasting time on exercises that are too hard or too easy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be able to do pull-ups before starting a skill journey?
No. Every journey starts at your current level. If a skill needs prerequisites, the program builds them first with easier progressions, for example self-assisted or negative pull-ups on the way to the muscle-up.
Can I train several skills at once?
Yes. You can add multiple skills to your goals and the program balances them across your week, together with any muscle, strength, or mobility goals you picked.
What happens when I get stuck on a progression?
The program keeps adjusting your reps and exercise variations so you continue building the strength the skill needs, and you can swap individual exercises for alternatives at a similar difficulty.
Are the skill journeys suitable for beginners?
Yes. The first stages of every journey are beginner friendly, and the questionnaire makes sure you start with exercises you can actually perform.
Which skills are shown on this page?
The interactive example on this page shows the handstand journey with its two parallel tracks. The full app contains journeys for many more skills, including the planche, front lever, and muscle-up.
